Words we say to the suffering....

Image
This is an excerpt from William P Young's Blog:  There is something that I have wanted to write about so here goes. Some of the stupid things people say to those who are suffering: If you had enough faith, then Suzie wouldn’t be sick . The tongue has the power of life and death, so stop saying Suzie has a brain tumor . If you believe enough and confess with your mouth that Suzie is healed, then she will be healed . Have you tried …fill in the blank. Do you think there might be un-confessed sin in your life? Suzie is God’s gift and He can take her when he wants to. This was God’s plan for Suzie. Now, having been ‘stupid’ myself, I understand the intent and motivation that often lies behind saying these kinds of things.  I wasn’t trying to be stupid; I was trying to help.  I thought I was bringing to bear the wisdom of God in a certain situation.  I truly thought what I was saying was going to be helpful and I thought what I was saying was true....

Burden Light

There's a place that I love to run and play There's a place that I sing new songs of praise Dancin' with my Father God in fields of grace There's a place that I lose myself within There's a place that I find myself again Dancin' with my Father God in fields of grace There's a place where religion finally dies There's a place that I lose my selfish pride Dancin’ with my Father God in fields of grace I love my Father, my Father loves me I dance for my Father, my Father sings over me And nothing can take that away from me -Big Daddy Weave It is amazing the lightness of spirit I feel when I am able to break off from the pursuit of living up to mainline Christian ideals. That's not to say I completely disagree with them. I am just letting myself not really care whether or not I please ...

Celebration of life...

My Aunt Kathy sent me the program from Aunt Helen's memorial service in Jacksonville, Florida. I cried...I laughed...I cried some more. Here is the cover...Note how she matured from bespectacled, conservative mother to sun hat, contact-wearing beach babe. :) Included in the program was a photocopy of Aunt Helen's handwritten funeral plans. I love #3: The title in the actual program of the eulogy is "say what needs to be said" in keeping with her plans. # 5 says "Everyone stand and sing a praise (after all, Jesus is in the service!)". It's just like Aunt Helen to direct things from Heaven. :) There is also a full page that is a brief biography of her life. If she'd only written an autobiography. The world would have been blessed by her story. This excerpt sums her up well: Helen loved Life! No matter what her children and gra ndchildren were involved in she was there in the middle of it. She loved picnics, traveling, any adventure, and ju...

Mark Lowry has some good thoughts on the underlying tendency toward "earning" that can still be part of us even after we understand that we can't earn God's love. Are we saying salvation is a free gift but if you keep it, it's up to you? The Gaither Vocal Band sang a song, several years ago, called We Shall Wear A Robe And Crown. It's a nice song. But it had a line in it that said, "When I get to Heaven, I'll tell King Jesus how I made it over." I told Bill I'm not singing that line. When I get to Heaven, I'm not gonna tell King Jesus how I made it over. He's gonna tell me how He brought me over! I can't make it to Heaven if He doesn't bring me. I don't know where Heaven is. The smartest minds on earth sent a toy car to Mars ... How are we gonna find Heaven? He's got to save us; He's got to keep us saved; He's got to take us home ... or we're not going. We say we believe salvation is a free gift, unmer...
